Friday, May 19, 2006 ETOH rant...ETOH is the medical/chemical term for alcohol (ethanol). Last year when I was on my trauma month, I could not believe the stupid mishaps/human stupidity attributed to alcohol. Tonight my helicopter was called out to transport a woman from a smaller hospital to a larger trauma center. She was involved in a MVA (motor vehicle accident), was pinned underneath the dashboard, had to be extricated (cut out) out of the car, had multiple facial fractures...and oh yeah, her blood alcohol was .34 Now legal limit most places is .08 So her ETOH level was over 4x the limit. DUH! In fact one place on the internet I found, describes a blood alcohol level of .35 at about the level where surgical anesthesia is maintained (in other words, same level of consciousness). As it turns out the weather was too bad and we could not make it so we had to turn around and come back. But again I was dumbfounded at human's and their choices. Brent has a funny mini-movie on his web-site as to why ER's will always be busy. GO SEE IT!
